A New Exhibit called Land On the Brink of Change will be opening in October 20th, 2010 at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.
This new exhibit focuses on the railroad survey route Isaac Stevens surveyed across the northwest fifty years after the Corps of Discovery's travels.
Travelling along with Mr. Stevens were two artists as he wanted to capture images of the western landscape for history to remember. Lithograph reproductions by these artists, John Mix Stanley and Gustavus Sohon, complement the exhibit panels.
After his railroad surveys, Isaac Stevens went on to help craft treaties with the Plains and Coastal tribes in the 1850s. The creation of many of today's Indian Reservations is a result of his actions.
Although it is true that the voyage of Lewis and Clark's brought change to the west, one could argue that Isaac Stevens actually placed western Indian Tribes on the true brink of change. |
