Historical Attractions in Great Falls, Montana

When traveling to Great Falls, Montana you will find that history beckons you. There are so many historical sights and attractions to see as well as much to learn about this fascinating part of the country. You may or may not be aware of it, but this part of the state was first discovered by Lewis and Clark during their westward expedition in 1805. If you would like to learn more about Lewis and Clark's expedition throughout the area, an excellent place to start is the Great Falls Historical Society as well as Lewis and Clark Services, which offers guided tours of the trail that Lewis and Clark took in the north central part of the state. The Great Falls Historic Trolly is also a great way to learn more about the local history. One of the most influential historical sights in the local area is actually Malmstrong Air Force Base. The state of Montana made an application for an air force base prior to the beginning of World War II. Once the application was approved, construction quickly began on the base and it went on to become one of the most important and contributing bases in the country during the war. Today, Malmstrom Air Force Base still provides a range of important services as a member of the United States Air Force.

Giant Springs Heritage State Park is another wonderful place to learn more about the history of the local area and how Great Falls developed over the years to become the third largest city in the state. Ulm Pishkun State Park allows visitors to learn about the Northern Plains and the culture of the native peoples who have made their home here for more than 1,500 years. The National Historic Trail Center overlooks the Missouri River and provides hands-on displays, exhibits and interactive presentations that are ideal for all ages. Learn more about the Native American culture as well as other exciting chapters in the history of Montana.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor to the state, the many historical sights and attractions in the Great Falls area will help you to learn more about and develop a deeper understanding of the history of Big Sky country.
